Why We Use Layher Scaffolding

The Layher Allround system is the most advanced modular scaffolding platform available. Faster to erect, safer by design, and capable of handling geometry that defeats traditional tube and fitting.

Our preferred system — and why

We've invested heavily in Layher's Allround modular system because, for the majority of projects, it's simply better — for our clients, for our team, and for the finished job.

The Allround system was developed in Germany and is now used on some of the most demanding scaffolding projects in the world, from Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben) to the Forth Road Bridge. The core innovation is the wedge-head node: a single connection point that accepts up to eight components at once, at any angle, without bolts or loose fittings.

That doesn't sound revolutionary until you're on a tight commercial programme and your scaffold goes up 40% faster than your competitor's — or when you need to wrap a complex Victorian roofline and the system adapts without fabrication workarounds.

We're long-standing Layher customers and hold one of the largest stocks of Allround components in the region, meaning we can mobilise quickly and handle large, fast-moving programmes without waiting on hire stock.

What it means for your project

The practical benefits of choosing a Layher contractor

Significantly faster to erect

The Allround system's wedge-head connection locks in place without bolts or loose fittings. A 10-storey commercial façade that takes 15 days in tube and fitting can be completed in 8 days with Layher — a real saving on your programme.

Engineered safety, not manual judgement

Tube and fitting relies on a scaffolder correctly tightening every coupler. Layher's AutoLock connection is mechanically consistent — up to 7 times the shear load capacity, with no loose components to work free over time.

Adapts to complex geometry

Up to eight connections can be made at a single node, at any angle. Irregular building profiles, curved facades, and multi-level access structures that would require extensive fabrication in tube and fitting are handled cleanly with the Allround system.

A cleaner, more professional finish

No exposed loose couplers, no mismatched fittings. Layher scaffolds have a consistent, uniform appearance that reflects well on your project — particularly important for high-profile commercial and heritage sites.

Proven at scale

Trusted on the UK's most demanding projects

The Layher Allround system has been specified for some of the most complex and high-profile scaffolding contracts in the country — projects where failure simply wasn't an option. That track record matters when you're choosing a system and a contractor.

Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben)

98-metre-high scaffold with 23,500 Allround components and a full temporary roof structure — one of the most high-profile Layher installations in the world.

Forth Road Bridge

FlexBeam system used for major maintenance, with inspection walkways spanning 120-metre sections across the bridge structure.

University of Cambridge

Europe's largest Layher Keder XL temporary roof combined with Allround access scaffolding for the Museum of Zoology refurbishment.

Warwick Castle

13-lift scaffold reaching 25 metres — almost the full height of Guy's Tower, a 15th-century structure requiring a sensitive, engineered approach.

Honest advice

We also hold large stocks of tube and fitting — and we know when to use it

Layher is our preferred system, but it's not the right tool for every job. We're proficient in all forms of scaffolding, and we'll always recommend what's genuinely best for your project — not what's easiest or most profitable for us.

Tube and fitting remains the go-to solution for highly irregular structures, tight urban access where modular components won't manoeuvre, very short-duration jobs where the setup overhead doesn't justify a system scaffold, and bespoke configurations that require maximum flexibility.

Our experienced estimators will assess your site and recommend the most appropriate solution. If tube and fitting is the right answer, that's what you'll get — erected to the same NASC standards and by the same CISRS-qualified team.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our scaffolding services.

What is the Layher Allround system?
Layher Allround is a modular system scaffolding platform developed in Germany and now used on major projects worldwide. Instead of loose tubes and couplers, it uses pre-engineered components that connect at standardised nodes via a wedge-head (AutoLock) mechanism. This gives consistent, calculable load-bearing capacity and far faster assembly than traditional tube and fitting.
Is Layher scaffolding more expensive?
Component costs are higher, but the total project cost is typically lower. The savings come from reduced labour time — erection and dismantling are significantly faster, and 80% of scaffolding costs come from on-site labour rather than the materials themselves. For most commercial and medium-to-large residential projects, Layher is more cost-effective overall.
Do you only use Layher scaffolding?
No — we hold large stocks of both Layher system components and traditional tube and fitting. Layher is our preferred system for most applications, but tube and fitting remains the right tool for certain jobs: tight access constraints, highly irregular structures, and short-duration projects where the labour savings don't justify system setup. We'll always recommend whichever is better suited to your specific project.
Is Layher scaffolding suitable for domestic projects?
Yes, though for smaller residential jobs the difference in erection time is less pronounced. We use Layher on domestic projects where access geometry or programme demands suit it — chimney stacks, multi-lift house wraps, and projects requiring a clean appearance. For a simple gutter replacement, tube and fitting may be equally appropriate.
Is Layher scaffolding independently certified?
Yes. The Layher Allround system holds building authority approvals from independent testing institutions and is manufactured to ISO 9001 quality management standards. All structural calculations and technical documentation are available and accepted by UK building control authorities.
