Why chimney scaffolding is different
A chimney is a tall, slender, often deteriorating structure, and the scaffold around it has to be built assuming neither is perfectly plumb and neither is perfectly strong. That drives the engineering harder than most other tall scaffolds — we’re never relying solely on the chimney for stability, we’re always counterweighting or buttressing or designing the scaffold to stand independently of the shell.
Brick chimneys built pre-war deserve particular respect. A scaffold tie into sound brickwork will hold all day; a tie into a loose header will pull the face out and put the whole job in trouble. Every anchor is proof-tested before use, no exceptions.
Working above other trades
Chimney work often happens with plant running or other trades active at the base. We’ll design the scaffold with full toe-boards, brick guards, netting or debris sheeting depending on what’s below, and we’ll establish an exclusion zone at the base that’s coordinated with the site manager. On live sites we’ll often work specific hours when the area below can be cleared.
Talk to us early
The survey phase is where the money is saved on chimney scaffolding. If you’ve got an upcoming inspection, repair programme or demolition anywhere in the Milton Keynes region, get in touch. We’ll visit the site, assess the chimney’s condition with your engineer, and produce a firm quote before you commit.
